Aeronautical Engineering Advanced (Level 3)

The primary objective of the Aeronautical Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship is to contribute to the development of a skilled workforce as a whole. This can be done where possible by integrating Apprenticeships in to the organisation’s model. These NVQ’s are suitable for those seeking recognition of their competence in one or more of a wide variety of activities and for maximum flexibility to meet the needs of skilled workers engaged in aeronautical engineering.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must hold an NVQ Level 2 in PEO and a Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy, applicants should also have a record of good attendance and reports. It is essential to be working in the industry and is employed in a role that can provide the range of activities required to complete the level 3. You must have the ability and the will to succeed, self-motivation and enthusiasm, be hard working and able to work as part of a team. All applicants will be required to attend an interview and undertake an initial assessment to assess numeracy and literacy skills. The interview will include explanation of what will be required on the course and the requirements for theory work and functional skills on the course.

WHAT WILL I LEARN
As part of the Advanced Apprenticeship Framework you will be required to complete several qualifications including Technical Certificate, NVQ and Key/Functional Skills.

You will learn about:
• Complying with statutory regulations and organizational requirements
• Using and interoperating engineering drawings and documents
• Working Effectively and efficiently in engineering
• Reinstating the work area on completion of aircraft engineering activities

HOW WILL I LEARN?
• You will attend college one day a week and this learning programme will include, lectures; discussions, projects, and self directed study, using a multimedia approach where appropriate. Within the programme, students receive full support in their skill development and acquisition of competence. Specialist learning support is available. Students are assessed through practical observation of skills, questioning and portfolio evidence.
• An assessor will visit you in your workplace to discuss with both you and your employer your progress and monitor the qualification targets that you are working towards.
• If required you will also be supported in gaining your functional skills in both maths and English level 2 which is a requirement of successful completion of an advanced apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship in Childcare L2

Apprentice candidates must be employed in the child care sector.

This is a Level 2 QCF qualification  for learners who work in a Pre-School, Children’s centre or Nursery.

This programme is suitable for new entrants to the children and young people’s workforce in England and who are looking for an initial qualification that is relevant to all areas within the sector. 

It is also appropriate for candidates who have some experience of working in the children and young people’s sector in a supervised role and want a qualification that recognises good standards of practice and compretence.  You could be working as an assistant pre-school worker, an assistant in a children’s centre or an assistant in a day nursery, nursery school or nursery class in a primary school. The Level 2 Certificate covers the skills and knowledge needed to care for children and young people up to 19 years of age in a wide range of settings.

Entry requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements, but you will be assessed on your levels of literacy and numeracy and offered additional support if it is flet that this will enable you to complete the qualification successfully.

Apprenticeship in Childcare L3

Apprentice candidates must have employment in the childcare sector.

This is a Level 3 QCF Qualification for learners who wish to become a pre-school worker, practitioner in a children’s centre.  Practitioner in a day nursery, nursery school or reception class in primary schools.

This programme of study is suitable for staff who are working at an un-supervised level in the children and young people’s workforce in England such as a pre-school worker, practitioner in a children’s centre.  Practitioner in a day nursery, nursery school or reception class in primary schools.

There are no formal entry requirements but you will need to be assessed on your levels of literacy and numeracy and offered addtional support if it is felt that this will enable you to complete the qualification successfully.

The Level 3 Diploma covers the skills and knowledge needed to care for others in a wide range of health & social care settings.

Business Administration (Level 2)

You should have 4 GCSEs at D grade and a good educational background, and the ability to communicate verbally and by written work. The programme is aimed at candidates who are in work roles where they have to provide a continually improving service to customers and are able to effect permanent improvements for the benefits of customers and the organisation.   • How to manage a diary system
  • How to maintain customer relations
  • How to store, retrieve and archive information

Business Improvement Techniques L2

Level 2 Business Improvement Techniques (NVQ)

Awarding Body EAL

Apprenticeships are a way of continuing learning whilst working and gaining a nationally recognised qualification. To qualify as an apprentice you must be in full-time employment.

 Working as an apprentice you will:

 • Earn real wages

• Gain new qualifications

• Gain new knowledge and key skills.

 Requirements for an Apprenticeship:

 All applicants will be interviewed to assess suitability before an offer of apprenticeship is made. Numeracy and Literacy assessments must also be undertaken to ensure you can achieve all the requirements of the apprenticeship programme. As an Employer you must be able to meet the range of activity in the workplace that is needed to achieve the QCF.

 This qualification is designed to improve productivity in the workplace and as such the employer must have total commitment to their employees and 100% support for the implementation of the recommendations that will arise from studying the Business Improvement Techniques.

 Duration of Qualification:

 On average this qualification will take between 12 to 24 months to complete.

 Fees/Contributions

 All employers must pay their Apprentice’s a minimum of wage of £2.60 per hour for all their time, including time spent training and at college. As skills develop many employers tend to increase wages. Apprentices aged 19 or over who have already spent a year on their apprenticeship must be paid at least the full National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate appropriate to their age. Study fees for under 19’s are fully funded by the Skills Funding Agency at no cost to the employer or apprentice.

If you are aged 16 to 18 years the Government will fund the cost of your training

  • If you are aged 19 to 24 years the Government will pay up to 50% of the cost of training and your employer will make a contribution
  • If you are over 25 years of age the employer contribution will be dependent  on the industry sector and existing qualifications

 The Business Improvement Techniques NVQ programme provides industry standard National Vocational Qualifications centred on the proven tools and techniques of lean manufacturing based on the principles of Kaizen (Continuous Improvement).  It is designed to support continuous improvement by promoting effective team working and developing learning skills across the wider workforce.  The course will involve structured learning in the form of presentations in the workplace covering each specific unit.

 This qualification can be applied in any working environment from the shop floor to the office across a wide range of industries.  This course requires an organisational approach to Business improvement.  Individuals are trained to involve themselves, through effective team working in continuous improvement techniques.

The course includes 5 mandatory units:

  •  Complying with Statutory Regulations and Organisations Safety Requirements
  • Contributing to Effective Team work
  • Applying Workplace Organisation Techniques (5s/5c)
  • Applying Continuous Improvement Techniques (Kaizen)
  • Creating Visual Management Systems

One optional unit must also be completed:

  • Contributing to the Analysis and Selection of Parts for Improvement
  • Contributing to Carrying out Lead Time Analysis
  • Carrying Out Set-up Reduction Techniques
  • Carrying out Autonomous Maintenance
  • Contributing to the Application of Problem Solving Techniques
  • Carrying out Flow Process Analysis
  • Contributing to the Creation of Standard Operating Procedures

Each unit offers an in-depth view of a different area of business and the continuous improvement techniques that can bring rapid and positive results.

Entry Requirements:

Entry onto the course will depend on successfully achieving the required level on the initial assessments.  Maths and English GCSE’s graded at A*-C within the last 5 years of achieving would exempt you from Key Skills or Functional Skills.  If you have not attained grades A*-C  you may be allowed to study  for a Functional Skills qualification at Level 2 or equivalent as part of the Apprenticeship framework.

Carpentry/Joinery (Level 2 and 3)

The work
Carpenters and joiners make and install the wooden fixtures and fittings found in domestic and commercial construction projects. These can include floorboards, kitchen and bathroom units, window frames and doors, roof trusses and wall partitions.
As a carpenter or joiner your work could fall into one or more of the following areas:

  • Formwork, which would involve building temporary wooden shuttering to support and shape setting concrete, for example on motorway bridge supports or foundation pillars
  • Machining, which is cutting and shaping timber for floorboards, skirting boards and window frames (see the wood machinist profile)
  • Bench joinery, this involves making and assembling doors, window frames, staircases and fitted furniture
  • First fixing (site work) – fitting the wooden structures of a building, such as floor and roof joists, roof timbers, staircases, partition walls, and door and window frames
  • Second fixing (site work) – installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, cupboards and shelving, as well as door handles and locks
  • Shopfitting – making and fitting interiors for shops, hotels, banks, offices and public buildings (see the shopfitter profile).

Your craft skills may extend across the whole range, or you could specialise in just one or two.

Entry
You will need GCSEs in subjects such as maths, English and design and technology, or vocational qualifications such as Edexcel Introductory Certificate or Diploma in Construction, which contains joinery options. For more information on Apprenticeships, visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk.
Training
Once working as a carpenter or joiner, you take on-the-job training leading to NVQ qualifications, such as Wood Occupations levels 1 to 3. This award contains several options, which include:

  • Bench Work – marking, setting out and producing joinery products
  • Site Work – installing first and second fixings and structural components
  • Shopfitting – manufacturing and installing internal and external frames, shop fronts, fixtures and finishings
  • Timber Frame Erection – putting up timber frame walls, laying floors and fixing roof structures
  • Wheelwrighting – marking out, making and assembling carriage joinery products.

The Institute of Carpenters (IOC) also offers various craft awards for carpenters and joiners looking to enhance their range of skills and qualifications. For details, contact IOC below.
Annual Income
Starting salaries are between £13,500 and £16,000.
Qualified joiners can earn between £17,000 and £23,000 a year.
Experienced joiners can earn up to £28,000.
Overtime and shift allowances will supplement income. Self-employed carpenters and joiners negotiate their own rates.

The construction industry has the biggest demand and it anticipates a need for around 12,500 new recruits into the wood occupations each year between now and 2011. If you are an experienced carpenter or joiner, you can progress to site supervision, clerk of works and construction management jobs, or move into a specialised area of work such building restoration or prop making. You can also work in kitchen and bathroom fitting, or move into self-employment.
