3D Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Part-time, 10 week course commencing 18th January 2012

The 10 week College Certificate course has been designed for anyone working or intending to work in an engineering environment who would like to develop the skills and knowledge to use draughting and design software packages.

Entry Requirements:  There are no specific entry requirements, but in order to complete the course candidates will require good ICT, Maths and English skills.

Course content:  The course uses the latest version of AutoCAD.  Candidates will be introduced to the 3D drawing environment and will learn the techniques required to produce and edit drawings up to intermediate level.

  • Introduction to CAD, CAM & CNC (What are they?)
  • Understanding the Creo/element and the interface of basic CAD tools/icons(window)
  • Setting a working directory and saving your work
  • Basic sketching and modelling of component
  • Creating simple assembly drawing/rendering
  • Creating cross sectional view/simple revolve/sweep
  • Engineering drawing with CAD & sectioning
  • Complex part and assembly modelling/sheet metal
  • Linking CAD with CAM and CNC e.g.  Laser Cutter
  • Application of CAD/FEA and other analysis

Abrasive Wheels

This course is designed for individuals who are required to change abrasive wheels at work.

Course Syllabus:

  • Identify hazards and risks arising rom the use of Abrasive Wheels and precautions to be observed.
  • Methods of marking Abrasive Wheels with their type, size and maximum operating speed.
  • How to store and transport Abrasive Wheels.
  • How to inspect and test Abrasive Wheels for damage.
  • Indentify the functions of all components used with Abrasive Wheels such as flanges, blotters, bushes, nuts etc.
  • How to assemble Abrasive Wheels correctly to make sure they are properly balanced and fit to use.
  • Identify the use of suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) such as eye protection.

Assessment:  There will be on-line short assessment at the end of the course.

ACS Gas

The ACS scheme assesses operative competence to carry out gas work safely. Refresher training is offered as part of the assessment package.
Entry Requirements:
The ACS Gas Scheme classifies applicants into the following categories:
Category 1 :
Applicants are experienced gas fitting operatives, with existing gas knowledge and skills seeking to renew expiring or expired certificates of gas safety competence or seeking assessment and certification to extend their range of gas work. Applicants applying for assessment must present to the centre all appropriate certificates of gas safety competence.
Category 2 :
Applicants hold a nationally recognised qualification, such as an NVQ/SVQ or City & Guilds Craft certificate, in a trade associated with gas work, e.g. plumbing. They must provide evidence that they hold qualifications relevant to the area of gas work they are seeking to obtain certification in. They must provide written evidence to the centre confirming that they have undertaken ‘on-the- job’ gas installation under the direct supervision of a competent operative.
Category 3 :
Applicants are new entrants to the gas industry. As such, they are without a relevant related qualification and/or experience, entering employment for the first time or changing career direction. Individuals in this category are advised to seek relevant training and experience.

Course Syllabus:

The assessment relates only to gas safety systems and equipment, and the knowledge and understanding required to install, inspect and service such systems and equipment in accordance with appropriate regulations and to provide advice to customers.
Assessment:
The assessments have been designed to test competence in gas safety work by both written and practical assessments in accordance with the requirements of the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) for Individual Gas Fitting Operatives.
The assessment relates only to gas safety systems and equipment, and the knowledge and understanding required to install, inspect and service such systems and equipment in accordance with appropriate regulations and to provide advice to customers.
Assessment Categories available:

  • CCN1 – Domestic Natural Gas Safety
  • CEN1 – Central Heating Boilers
  • WAT1 – Instantaneous Water Heaters
  • CKR1 – Cookers
  • HTR1 – Gas Fires
  • CPA1 – Combustion Performance Analysis
  • MET1 – Domestic Gas Meters

Gas Safe Registration:
On successful completion of your assessment categories, an application for certification will be sent to CITB-ConstructionSkills. If they decide to recommend the issue of a certificate of competence, CITB- ConstructionSkills will notify Gas Safe of the assessment categories successfully completed for inclusion on their national database. CITB- ConstructionSkills will also notify Gas Safe of assessment outcomes resulting in the termination of an assessment.
Successful completion of ACS assessment does not automatically result in Gas Safe registration. You must apply separately direct to Gas Safe and complete their registration process.

Award in Food Safety Awareness in Catering (Level 1)

Who is this course for?
The new CIEH Level 1 Award in Food Safety Awareness in Catering is run as a half-day course, suitable for a variety of candidates, including new employees with minimal or no prior food safety knowledge, also for members of church groups, voluntary organisations, youth clubs and sports clubs.
